DIY: Bow Back T-Shirt
So we’ve done another DIY project to show you all how to repurpose the cool clothing you find in your local thrift store. For today, we’re going to teach you how to create a bow back t-shirt.
Step 1: Cut the sleeves and collar
First, I folded the shirt halfway with the two sleeves touching together. Then, to cut the collar I measured two inches away from the collar then cut it a round form like so:
To cut the sleeves I measured three inches from the stitch lines then simply cut downward:
To cut the hem I kept the hem folded and cut two inches off:
The finished outcome should look a little like this:
Hint: In this step, you can a cut more or less depending on your preference.
Step 2: Make the slits in the back where the bows will be
You’ll need to fold the shirt down the back middle fold making sure the shoulder seams are touching. Before doing this step, you can iron the shirt to get the most symmetrical shape possible.
Folded down the middle fold should like so:
Now, you’re going to measure the back fold to see how many slits you’re going to make. You want to make sure the slits are spaced out evenly. For my shirt, I made the slits 3 inches wide. You can use a pen at this part to know where to cut.
Once you’ve marked the spaces, you’re going to only make small cuts. After that you’re going to fold that back away from you to the length you want the slits to be. Then, you’re going to cut the slits all the way stopping at the folded part.
The slits should look something like this:
Step 3: Use the scraps to make the strips that will make your bows
Using the scraps from the sleeves and hem you’re going to want to cut half an inch long strips. My shirt only has 5 bows so I’ll only need 5 strips.
Now, you’re going to stretch those out to make them long. They should look like this:
Step 4: Make the bows using the strings
The fun part has finally arrived–time to make the bows. Now, it might seem tricky but they’re actually really easy to create.
First, you’ll need to gather the fabric in an accordion shape like so:
Now, you’re going to take your string and tie that gathered section in place. I made sure that the string was evenly spaced without the top or bottom having a longer section. Then, I made sure the ends went in opposite directions.
Now, you’re going to tie back in forth with one end going under and the other going over it should look like this before you tie the knot:
You’re going to tie the knot in the back of the shirt so it won’t show in the front. Once you tie it you’re going to cut the excess fabric.
The final knot and bow should look like so:
As you can see the accordion gathering creates the bow shape. You’re going to follow these steps to create your other bows.
And now that’s it! You’ve just created a super cute bow back t-shirt. Your finished bow back shirt should look like this:
Wasn’t that super quick and easy? This is just one of the many ways you can repurpose a thrift store find of yours. Check back soon to see what other DIY project we have going on!
