Volunteering in Long Beach
Here at Treasure Hunt giving back to our community is at the core of what our establishment is about. Our profits are all donated back to New Life Beginnings, a women’s and children’s homeless shelter. But if you want to have more of a direct hand in helping those in need, then keep scrolling down to see the volunteer opportunities we’ve found throughout Long Beach.
Operation Teddy Bear is a literacy program that helps 5,600 underserved first-graders throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District. The children receive literacy backpacks that include reading books, toothbrushes, coloring books, pencils, crayons, math flashcards, and lastly, a teddy bear. In addition, teachers receive school supplies to better educate the kids. The day the backpacks are delivered volunteers spend a day with the kids reading to them and showing them how volunteering benefits the community. In the Food for Kids program non-perishable food is delivered to Title One elementary schools in the Compton and Long Beach Unified School Districts. Underserved families are given ten items of food such as pasta, tuna, oatmeal, soup, and rice that counts as their source of food for the weekend. The families also receive nutrition flyers to teach them the benefits of having a healthy diet. Volunteers can help by donating money to buy the food, donating actual food, or by supporting a local food drive sponsored by the program. If arts and music is something you’re interested in teaching children about, then you should look into the Art-To-Go program. It’s an after-school program where volunteers teach art instruction at Title One elementary schools. The art work done by the children is then presented at an annual art show in May where their work and knowledge is celebrated by the community.
